Digital Media Artist Alan Bigelow Presents Work at MATX MIXTAPES! Event

February 28, 2011

Digital media artist Alan Bigelow will give a presentation on the emerging form of digital literature on Friday, March 4, at 2 pm in the VCU Student Commons Theater on the Monroe Park Campus.

His presentation, Webyarns.com: Words Without Limits, is part of the MATX MIXTAPES! series, sponsored by the MATX Student Guild to bring digital artists and theorists to Richmond.

The Media, Art, and Text PhD program is an innovative, interdisciplinary program bringing together artists, writers, and media professionals to study new media and its effect on contemporary culture.

For Webyarns.com: Words Without Limits, Bigelow will show a selection of his digital works,  comment on his creative process, and discuss the emerging field of digital literature.

Created in Flash and using images, text, audio, and video, Bigelow’s nontraditional narratives employ poetic and occasionally humorous or ironic metaphors.  The stories are created for viewing on the web, but they can (and have been) shown as gallery installations.  Bigelow’s digital stories have appeared in Turbulence.org, Rhizome.org, Los Angeles Center for Digital Art, The National Art Center (Tokyo), Root Division (San Francisco), Drunken Boat, Blackbird, and many other venues worldwide.

Bigelow currently teaches full-time at Medaille College in Buffalo, New York, and is a visiting online lecturer in Creative Writing and New Media at De Montefort University, Leicester, UK.

You can see Alan Bigelow’s work at Webyarns.com.  His piece Brainstrips was featured with commentary in VCU’s award-winning publication Blackbird: online journal of literature and the arts Fall 2009 8.2 .

The event is free and open to the public.
