About the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences
The VCU College of Humanities and Sciences was founded in 1969 when Richmond Professional Institute merged with the Medical College of Virginia to create Virginia Commonwealth University. Since then more than 39,000 alumni have graduated from undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs within the College of Humanities and Sciences.
The Monroe Park campus borders downtown Richmond, as well as the historic neighborhoods of Oregon Hill, the Fan District, and the Carver neighborhood. The College offers many community engagement opportunities for faculty research, student learning, and community service.
VCU’s setting provides a mix of state-of-the-art facilities with Victorian mansions along tree-lined streets. Located in Richmond, the historic capital city of Virginia, VCU reaps the advantages of being in a major city with cultural and professional experiences both on and off campus. The university presents the best aspects of traditional college life while offering students a chance to experience real-world diversity.
The thirteen departments and three schools that make up the College of Humanities and Sciences are remarkably diverse. Some, like English and Mathematics, were part of RPI. Others, like Women’s Studies and Statistical Research and Operations, were created within the past ten years to create a space for faculty research interests and to meet student demand.
